8 things you didn't know about Garrett Haake

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Each weeknight, you see Garrett on 41 Action News at 10, reporting on everything from KC's chances of landing the RNC, to the dismantling of a towering waterslide anyone's yet to ride, to a lime shortage allowing him to sit at a bar with a margarita for his on-air report.

That's the Garrett you know.

I wanted you to know a little more about the Garrett we know. So, I asked him a handful of questions so you'll feel like you know him just a little bit better when you see him on TV. Here are his answers:

  1. You have 15 minutes of free time, what do you do?

I’m probably on my computer reading something. I try to stay current on all kinds of news beyond what we typically cover – so I’m reading about the Knicks coaching search, a Senate race in Iowa or some obscure Game of Thrones review. I get lost in strange corners of the Internet all the time. I’m curious about too much stuff.

  1. Books or Movies? And what’s your favorite?

Books. I’m a voracious reader and I tend to get sucked in by different authors. I might read three or four books in a row by the same author if I find something I really like. My latest obsession is David Mitchell. He wrote Cloud Atlas (amazing book, disappointing movie). I just finished reading his “1000 Autumns of Jacob DeZoet” and almost immediately started on another of his novels. Great, weird,  stuff.

  1. What would we be most surprised to know about you?

I have a strangely international family. We moved all the time for my dad’s job, so for a few years as a kid I lived in Germany. Since my brothers and I left the nest, my parents have lived in Australia, Singapore and soon – Dubai. We’ve gotten chances to visit them and travel all over the world.

  1. What is in the console of your car? (you willing to take a picture? – no staging!)

Nothing terribly interesting. Coins, Purell, chapstick. I could basically live out of my trunk though. I’ve got a couple days of clothes for breaking news coverage, but also an empty cooler, a beach blanket, towel, Frisbee and bottle opener – because apparently I’m ready for a beach party at any time.

  1. Favorite discovery about KC?

KC is a surprisingly great live music town. I love small-venue concerts so I’ve been really pleased to find great bands playing at places like the Riot Room, Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club and little jazz clubs like The Phoenix or The Green Lady.

  1. What made you smile today?

I had a great time talking to people about the RNC coming to Kansas City this week. I’m a political junkie, but I still feel new to Kansas City so I really enjoy bouncing my theories and tips off of folks who have a better sense of this town’s history.

  1. Describe your mom in 140 characters or less.

Marylou Haake is the platonic ideal of the mother of three boys. Patient, understanding, unfailingly loving and the loudest fan at all of our sports growing up.

  1. Describe your perfect day off work.

Sleep in. Go for a run. Have brunch and a bloody Mary somewhere. Go lay by the pool and read/relax til I’m close to crispy. There’s probably a nap in there somewhere, and dinner and some live music out on the town. Man that sounds good. Is it Saturday yet?
