KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A Kansas City firefighter holds her own not only on the force, but in the ring.
Mary Ortega started boxing at 14 years old. Originally, she boxed to stay in shape for soccer but it became her true love. She won golden globes twice, silver gloves once and the Junior Olympics once.
In 1997, Ortega turned pro, winning three world titles at 108, 112 and 115 pounds. Her last boxing match was 3 years ago, but Ortega is going back to the ring.
On May 10, Ortega will participate in her final fight at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan., at 7 p.m.
Ortega has served as a Kansas City firefighter for 10 years. She credits her family as a key to her success.
