NBC Action News anchor Cynthia Newsome will ride in the pace car Sunday at the annual Susan G. Komen Kansas City Race for the Cure ® .

Last month, Cynthia revealed during the evening news she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer .

Joined by Ed, her husband of nearly 10 years, Cynthia gave us an update on her treatment in an interview with friend and co-worker George Waldenberger on Thursday’s Midday show.

“I’m about halfway there with my chemo treatments,” Cynthia said, saying the bi-weekly treatments make her feel tired, but after a few days she “perks up” and feels better.

Cynthia discovered a lump in her breast in the shower, and urges women to not only get yearly mammograms, but to do self-examinations.

“I’m so glad that I caught it because I caught it early,” she said. “That’s the key is catching it early.”

Cynthia looks forward to riding in the pace car ahead of Sunday’s race and waving to her countless supporters and other attending the event.

“I want (those fighting cancer) to know and to be encouraged that others that are in this fight as well, or may soon be, that there is hope and there is encouragement.”

And to the supporters who have sent Cynthia and Ed notes of encouragement, they want to let you know they are not going unheard.

“We sit together and read every card and read every letter and we’ll read every facebook message,” says Ed, who proposed to Cynthia live during a newscast in June 2001. “We’ve been thankful of all the people who have taken the time to think about us.”
