Grant funds research to predict breast cancer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A Kansas researcher could help millions of women avoid undergoing unnecessary chemotherapy.

Doctor Daniel Welch, of the University of Kansas Cancer Center, has received a $250,000 Susan G. Komen for the Cure grant.

He is using the money to fund his research into predicting the type of breast cancer a person has and the best treatment to help cure it, based on a person's genetic makeup.

Welch says it could be years before human trials can begin.

Welch is one of four researchers in Kansas to get a Komen grant.
