Those who know St. Jude know why the Dream Home is so important

RAYMORE, Mo. - Tickets for the 2012 St. Jude Dream Home went on sale Thursday, and we spoke with some folks who really know the benefits of helping St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Jake Lewis, from Overland Park, joined 41 Action News Meteorologist George Waldenberger at the St. Jude Dream Home Thursday morning.

Jake went to St. Jude when he was just 7 years old.

Jake had just started a new school and when he failed a vision screening, he went to see a doctor, who found something on his optic nerve.

An MRI revealed a tumor on his brain and local doctors said the survival rate after removal was about 50 to 55 percent.

After doing some research, Jake's parents took him to St. Jude, where they told him the survival rate would be about 80 percent.

Today, Jake is doing well as a high school student in Overland Park.

Back at the Dream Home phone bank at the 41 Action News studios, Cathleen, Robert and their daughter Mary Kate talked with 41 Action News about their experience with St. Jude.

Cathleen and Robert's other daughter, Annie, was a patient there. She passed away a year after her treatment , but Cathleen praised their time at St. Jude.

"We had a remarkable experience," Cathleen said. "It was a huge blessing for us."

Cathleen said Annie felt so loved at St. Jude. "She would go into her clinic and all the doctors and nurses, they all knew her. Everywhere in the hospital we went, people were just so loving on each of the kids."

Cathleen said not only did they take care of Annie, but they took care of the entire family.
