A glossary of medical terms used in the Misty Horner autopsy report:
Breech birth: Birth of a baby with the buttocks, rather than the head, emerging first.
Doula: A non-medical assistant in childbirth. A doula is not the father but is usually a woman who is experienced in childbirth. The role of the doula is to provide the mother with physical and emotional assistance before, during, or after childbirth.
Endocarditis: An inflammation of the valves of the heart.
Endometritis: Inflammation of the endometrium, the inner layer of the uterus.
Episiotomy: A procedure in which an incision is made between the vagina and anus, in the aid in the delivery of a baby.
Hemorrhage: Bleeding or the abnormal flow of blood.
Meconium: Dark, sticky material that is normally present in the intestine at birth and passed in the feces after birth, after trypsin and other enzymes from the pancreas have acted on it. The passage of meconium before birth can be a sign of fetal distress.
Sepsis: The presence of bacteria, other infectious organisms or toxins created by infectious organisms in the bloodstream with spread throughout the body.
