KANSAS CITY, Mo. - David Sheff and his son Nic can smile again after Nic's 10-year battle with drug abuse. They were chosen to be the featured speakers at Tuesday night’s Message in a Bottle fundraising event for Kansas City's First Call.
First Call provides alcohol and drug prevention and recovery services in the greater Kansas City metro. First Call President Molly O'Neill and the Sheff's were guests on 41 Action News Midday on Tuesday.
David talked about how his family didn't recognize the early warning signs that Nic was having a problem. They also said they didn't know where to turn find help once they realized they needed help to know what to do.
Nic talked about his struggles as a teenager and feelings of insecurity that led to his drug abuse. Now in his late 20's, Nic is sober and happily married.
They praised the First Call organization for being a place of refuge for families who are alcohol and substance abuse.
