KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The message is simple: get a screening. It's a health screening that could save your life. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men. One in six will get the disease during their lifetime.
David Emerson was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2005, just a couple weeks after he turned 42. Emerson's farther also had the disease.
He's now 48 years old and is very thankful saying, "at this point, I've lived twice as long as the norm."
Doctors told David his prostate cancer was advanced, already spreading to his bones and other parts of his body. He had lost 60 pounds and sought different ways to fight the disease.
Through experimental treatments, flying to Boston to see his doctors often and changing his diet and lifestyle, David is not only battling prostate cancer, but he is also able to promote awareness and raise money for cancer research through his foundation called "Faith, Love, Hope, Win."
David says the idea to start his foundation came from inspiration.
"After diagnosis, starting treatment, my wife and I thought we need to do more with our time," explained Emerson
Emerson's foundation has been working to raise funds for cancer research for over six years, hosting events from a night at the greenhouse to poker tournaments. Thus far foundation has raised more than $220,000.
This Friday "Faith, Hope, Love, Win" is hosting a golf tournament at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course in Spring Hills, Kansas. There is still room for more teams.
Check-in begins at 11a.m. and money raised will support research and the families affected by prostate cancer.
