(CNN) - Over the weekend, bits of gossip floated about suggesting that "Modern Family's" Eric Stonestreet, originally from Kansas City, Kan., and a Kansas State alum, has a brand new love interest.
A "source" close to the actress told the U.K.'s Daily Mail that "Charlize and Eric get along incredibly well," and that "they started off as friends but things are blossoming between them."
Stonestreet, who picked up an Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy Sunday night, and Oscar winner Theron were said to have met through mutual pals at an L.A. shindig earlier this year.
But ahead of TV's big night, Stonestreet shot down the reports.
"I wish people would stop spreading rumors that Charlize Theron and I are dating. Its starting to make Halle Berry jealous," he tweeted Sunday morning before later explaining to E! on the red carpet that he had no idea how the rumor began.
"I would love to know," Stonestreet said. "For all of you watching at home, that's the definition of our town, that I'm rumored to be dating Charlize Theron."
Indeed, Stonestreet attended the Emmys without Charlize - but he did have a date. The actor - who'll be back on "American Horror Story" portraying a killer - brought along his best friend Paul, who "dared me to audition for the first play I ever did."
