KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Seven is thought to be a lucky number. After Monday night, local chef Colby Garrelts would attest.
Garrelts’ and his Westport restaurant, Bluestem, had been nominated six times as best chef in the Midwest by the James Beard Foundation before finally breaking through Monday night, claiming the award in his seventh try.
He wasn’t immediately available for comment Monday night, but in a 2012 interview, Garrelts said that being a part of the Kansas City community and reflecting the community’s food passion to national media was important to his cooking and his restaurant.
Garrelts competed against two chefs from Minneapolis and chefs from Milwaukee and St. Louis.
