You can grow vegetables in your own backyard with a raised garden bed much like this one that First Lady Michelle Obama planted with local school children at the White House Kitchen Garden March 16, 2011 in Washington, DC.

OLATHE, Kan. - The first day of Spring is still weeks away and that means now is the time to start planning your garden.
Dennis Patton with K-State’s Research and Extension Center stopped by 41 Action News to talk about the importance of testing the soil before you begin.
Patton says that soil testing is the only way to know the nutrient levels in your soil and better ensure the best yield from your plants.
This year, the Extension Center is again offering a limited number of free soil tests for Johnson County homeowners and agriculture producers.
Samples need to be brought or mailed to the Johnson County Extension office at 11811 S. Sunset Drive, Suite 1500, in Olathe, Kansas, 66061. Testing will be done on a first-come, first-served basis.
