Attention party animals: your drinking habit could do more damage than you think.
In fact, a new study suggests that binge drinking may impair memory long after the hangover has worn off, perhaps because of damage to the hippocampus. The study was performed in Spain and appears in the journal “Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research”
.
Researchers gave language and memory tests to 122 college students between the ages of 18 and 20.
In nearly all the word-based tests, the self-identified binge drinkers performed more poorly than those who say they drink 'moderately'.
It's important to note -- study does not prove a cause-and-effect relationship between binge drinking and memory problems. Researchers say the findings do show an association between the two.
