KANSAS CITY, Mo. - About 1,700 Kansas City families lined up at Della Lamb at 500 Woodland Ave Friday for Operation Santa Claus 2012. It’s an annual holiday program that serves low-income families in Kansas City.
Families are supplied with holiday food, clothing and gift for the entire family.
Judy Akers, executive vice president of Della Lamb, spent much of Friday morning handing out bags of clothing.
“These are bags with children's clothing, so for each child in the family there will be one new sweat suit, one new pair of underwear, a pair of socks, a new hat, new pairs of gloves," she said. "We're serving over 2,200 children plus another 535 teenagers."
Akers said Della Lamb collects brand new clothing and household items throughout the year to prepare for the Santa Claus event.
“We have seen a tremendous increase in the number of families who are asking for help, many for the first time,” she said.
Akers said that due to the generosity of the community, the organization can provide a complete Christmas for a family of four.
