KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Retailers in the Kansas City metro are starting to roll out their black Friday ads, with two weeks left before Thanksgiving.
Retailers all over the country count on the holiday shopping season for a profitable end to the year.
Kris Koenig has owned the Frankly Basic clothing boutique in the Crestwood Shopping Center for eight years. He considers Christmas to be a wonderful time.
"I'm always looking forward to the holiday season because it is one of the busier times of the year. November, December are two of your best months out of the year," Koenig said.
Like so many other business owners, Koenig remembers the 2008 downturn and the affect it had on his purse sales. His hobo purses that usually sell for $200 to $300 were marked down to $50.
"Even when I discounted them, they were still sitting here," he said. "No one was buying them."
Big-box stores are also gearing up for Christmas and Black Friday. Many retailers are already offering previews of their sales online.
UMKC economist William Black said as we get closer to Christmas, the deals will give a clearer picture of how the economy is really doing. If consumers are willing to pay full price, that means the economy is rebounding.
"If you go back a couple of years there are all kinds of deep discounts to lure the consumer into the store and lure the consumer into actually buying," Black explained. "Retailers don't want to do deep discounts."
Online sales and the rebirth of the layaway plan are expected to help retailers sell their merchandise without deep discounts. That could turn into money Koenig looks forward to counting during the 2012 holiday season.
