OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - I had an incredible workout at the Jewish Community Center in Overland Park, Kansas, last Thursday. It was perfect timing for the National Cancer Survivors Day.. It's often called the best kept fitness secret in Johnson County.
Barry Baumfalk, Director of Fitness and Sports at the center, invited me to attend the Group Cycle class. The class purchased a pink bicycle recently to honor a fellow class member who is a breast cancer survivor. The class also made a cash donation to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure in her name. Riding the Pink Bicycle was an honor for me because I'm a breast cancer survivor too.
During the one-hour class I rode 26 miles on the stationary bike at various speeds and resistance. It was an excellent cardio workout and I would definitely return.
I also learned that you don't have to be Jewish to join. Half the members are not Jewish. The goal is to be a fitness provider for everyone in the community. There's a pool, tennis courts and all kinds of exercise equipment.
I enjoyed the workout and I also enjoyed meeting everyone in the class and at the facility. People were kind, understanding and made me feel welcome.
