JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. - Tom is a 14-year-old 8th grader from Johnson County, Kan., whose life story is a great example of why it’s so important to work out.

Tom was born with some physical challenges including weak muscles. But through working out he has increased his muscle tone and is better able to walk and lift things.

I met Tom at the Jewish Community Center’s Fitness Center, where he has been working with his trainer Erica for about 5 years.

Erica started with strengthening Tom's muscles through exercising in the swimming pool. From there, she moved him inside to Kinesis exercises that work large and small muscle groups through resistance training.

Despite his challenges, Tom has a great attitude and told me he loves to workout. When he completes a challenge like push-ups, he turns-up the music and starts dancing. Great idea everyone - reward yourself when you meet your exercise goals! Thanks Tom.

You can visit the  Jewish Community Center's website for details on other fitness programs for people of every age and fitness level.
