KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Each Jan. 1, I choose to reflect on the previous year and set goals for the New Year. In 2013, I am hoping viewers will join me in building on our past successes with the weekly workout segments. And I'm hoping you will participate in the first Newsome Weight Loss Challenge.
2012 was a year of many wonderful successes for me. As many of you know, I’m a breast cancer survivor. I returned to work on Jan. 1, 2012 following 8 chemotherapy treatments and a lumpectomy. On Feb. 14, I completed 33 radiation treatments and doctors delivered the good news that I was cancer-free.
Now that I’m a breast cancer survivor, I have a vested interest to continue my health and fitness routines. I know that research shows a healthy lifestyle filled with exercise and healthy eating can reduce a person’s risk of developing any type of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. As a breast cancer survivor, that same research shows a healthy lifestyle reduces my risk of recurrence -- developing another cancer.
So the Newsome Weight Loss Campaign is not based on a fun, trendy, popular New Year’s resolution. For me, it’s a matter of doing everything in my power to live a long, healthy, productive and meaningful life. I want to inspire others who desire to achieve the same healthy lifestyle; that together we can help each other reach our goals.
So, here’s how it works. If you would like to participate in the Newsome Weight Loss Challenge, simply email your picture with your name and how much weight you want to lose to: NewsomeChallenge@KSHB.com. By sending me your picture and information you are giving me permission to post it on our website and on-the-air. Join us anytime and start losing weight.
There are no prizes and it’s not a competition. We’re simply building a community of friends who will share and get practical and supportive information on my workout web page at: http://www.kshb.com/subindex/lifestyle/lifestylewildcard1 .
I will post my weight and weight loss goals and share my food diary and exercise activities. When our group is invited to participate in free exercise events or free nutrition seminars, I will send you an email telling you when and where. You will only receive those emails if I have your email as an official participant of Newsome’s Weight Loss Challenge. Send your email information to NewsomeChallenge@KSHB.com and let me know you are in the crew!
On my workout web page, you can also submit questions about obstacles you face to losing weight. We will post new questions weekly along with answers I will get from a nutritionist, a fitness expert or an exercise psychologist.
Newsome’s Weight Loss Challenge is from Sunday, January 13 through Sunday, April 7. At the end of that period I will email participants to vote on whether or not we should continue.
I also want to hear from you! If you have some great tips on healthy eating or exercise share them with me, I’ll post them on the site with your picture and we can all benefit! Email me your encouraging thoughts, ideas or one-paragraph stories and I’ll pick some and post them in our “Inspiring Ideas” segment.
So, here’s my information. I was invited to Midwest Nutrition in Overland Park, Kan. Owner and Wellness Coach Ginger McCune was kind enough to take my measurements and offer me some advice. I am 5’9, 193 lbs., with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 28.6.
Now, let’s get started. Let’s can get healthy together; it’s more fun that way and it works! We can do it.
