KEARNEY, Mo. - When Angela Walters learned to quilt, she had no idea where it would lead.

She bought a fancy machine and then started doing quilting for paying customers.

It was traditional quilting, and she loved it. She got invited to a meeting of the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild, and that was all it took.

"To be able to come in and work with quilts that were totally different than anything I'd ever seen, it completely stretched me past my boundaries," Walters said.

It turns out Kansas City has the second-largest quilting guild in the country. The whole thing started a few years ago in Los Angeles, where people wanted to bring a more contemporary palette of colors and modern design to quilting.

Angela Walters' quilting world has changed as well.

"I've started my blog and went kind of nationally with quilting for customers and now I'm writing a book," she said.

She also gives lessons at quilting shows.
