KANSAS CITY, Kan. - After falling 40 feet from a Kansas City overpass, a 2-year-old German Shepherd's health went from bad to worse.
On Friday, two women leaving a horse show at Hale Arena near Kemper Arena saw Lindey fall from the Cesar Chavez viaduct and land in the arena parking lot.
Nancy Campbell, president of the Missouri German Shepherd Rescue, took the women's call for help.
"The witnesses that saw it, their words were, '(Lindey) came flying over the overpass,'" Campbell said. "When I stood there and looked at (the overpass), my eyebrows shot up. All I could think was 'how did she survive it?'"
Lindey was rushed to Piper Heritage Vet Clinic where veterinarian Dr. Richard Smith said in addition to being malnourished and having worms, Lindey broke four teeth, ruptured her spleen, scraped her hind legs and broke every tendon and ligament in her front paws.
"A real classic set of injuries that she has," Smith said. "Typical of a fall from a high, elevated surface."
Lindey has to wear full-leg splints on her front legs. Without them, should couldn't even stand, let alone walk.
"She's just not had a whole lot of care," Smith said.
Her previous health condition, how far from the overpass she landed and the fact no one has come looking for her has many thinking Lindey's fall was no accident.
"Our hearts always stop because we are just praying that that's not what happened," Campbell said. "But the evidence sometimes tends to point that way. We'll never know for sure."
Smith said Lindey's internal injuries have started to heal, but repairing her front legs and teeth will require an extensive surgery.
Campbell said it will likely cost more than $10,000 to get Lindey to a point where she can be adopted. She said people have already started to make donations, and she partnered with Love 4 Paws in an effort to raise enough money to get Lindey the care she needs.
