CHICO, Calif. - There is a happy ending to a story about a dog that traveled from Colorado to Kansas, then all the way to Chico, Calif.
The Chico Animal Service has raised $500 to help the Howard family's dog, Sara, get back home to suburban Denver.
It all started two weeks ago when Sara escaped from a relative’s home in Kansas while staying there.
The dog was picked up by a transient and ended up in California, where animal shelter workers found her identifying microchip and contacted her owners.
However, the Howards didn't have enough money for a plane ticket to get Sara home. So the folks at the animal shelter raised the money by appealing for donations.
"Sara is the first dog I've ever had,” said her owner, Jennifer Howard, ”and just to see the support and love from strangers, just to want to help her get back to our family, is a huge blessing."
Sara is still at the California animal shelter, but she's expected to take a flight home next week.
