KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Coffee baristas are in Kansas City participating in the Specialty Coffee Association of America Regional Championship this weekend.
The event is considered the Iron Chef of coffee. Baristas had 15 minutes to prepare drinks for four judges. They were scored on taste and presentation.
“Over the years, I’ve seen a little bit of it all,” said Josh Ferguson, who attended the championship. “I’ve seen some very unique stuff – everything from fruits to smoke that’s been infused with espresso – you name it. It’s always exciting this year to see what baristas will come up with.”
Winners go on to compete in the U.S. Barista Championship in Boston this April. The contest continues through Sunday at the Guild KC near 16th and Locust. The event is open to the public.
