Sprint in talks with Japanese company Softbank, says deal could shift control

Sprint says it is in talks with Japanese cell phone company Softbank about a potential substantial investment in the Overland Park-based company.
In a statement Thursday, Sprint Nextel Corp. said there’s no guarantee the talks will lead to any transaction.
But if one happened, the No. 3 U.S. wireless carrier said, it could involve a change of control of Sprint.
No more details on the talks will be released unless it reaches an agreement with Softbank, the Sprint statement said.
At midday trading Thursday, Sprint stock was up 17 percent following the initial reports that surfaced earlier in the day.
