OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Disneyland of sporting goods stores is coming to Johnson County.
SCHEELS announced Monday it will open a brand new store in Corbin Park, at 135th and Metcalf in Overland Park.
The 220,000 square foot store will be a collection of entertainment venues, specialty shops and boutiques.
According to its website, SCHEELS has no stores in Kansas or Missouri. Twenty-five current locations are spread out across 10 states from Wisconsin to Nevada.
“After years of visits to the Kansas City market, we feel we have found the best location possible for the future to serve our customers in Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri," said SCHEELS Chief Executive Officer Steve D. Scheel.
The store will include a 16,000-gallon aquarium, a 65-foot-tall Ferris Wheel, a wildlife mountain, shooting galleries, laser shot shooting simulators and sport simulators.
A deli and fudge shop named Gramma Ginna’s will serve soups and sandwiches, coffee, 24 flavors of homemade fudge and 18 flavors of gelato.
The store will break ground in summer 2013 and is scheduled to open by summer 2015. It will join Von Maur and J.C. Penney as anchor tenants at Corbin Park
The store will employ more than 400 people.
