Sandwich chain Subway is now the world’s largest restaurant chain with 33,749 restaurants worldwide.
McDonald’s fell to second place with 32,737 stores.
Subway had already been number one in the U.S. since 2002, but took the global lead thanks to expansion efforts in Asia.
McDonald's remains the revenue champion. The company reported $24 billion in revenue for its last fiscal year. Subway generated roughly $15.2 billion, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
