JEFFERSON CITY, MO -- Claiming property you didn't know about is a great way to boost your wallet in these hard economic times.

Even if you've checked the Web sites before to see if your name is listed, a new batch of property has arrived and your name could be on the list.

The Missouri State Treasurer's Office is going through this year's batch of unclaimed property. It arrived from dormant safe deposit boxes.

The state has $550 million in 3.5 million accounts of unclaimed property. It ranges from cash and coins to baseball cards.

"We had a story where we returned thousands of dollars to an elderly woman, and she was being evicted because the building was being demolished," Missouri Treasurer Clint Zweifel said. "This money helped her find a new place to live."

Property gets turned over after five years if a financial or insurance company, public agency, or business loses contact with the property owner.

The average return is $350.
