Edy Hinton-Ikenokwalu was wheeled into the Johnson County courtroom in handcuffs. The Johnson County District Attorney's office re-filed charges of theft and obstruction last week, concerning an incident at a JC Penny's store last year.
The charges were initially dropped after a mental health evaluation found Hinton incompetent to stand trial.
Following a Call For Action investigation, the DA's office re-filed the charges. If convicted, Hinton faces six to 18 months in jail.

Hinton remains in the Johnson County jail under suicide watch.
