OLATHE, Kan. - The Johnson County Sheriff's Department has issued a warning about a potential scam where the criminals use a phone number registered to the department in an attempt to get money.
The department reports receiving several calls from potential victims. The criminals apparently call from what appears to be the main non-emergency dispatch phone number. They identify themselves as an employee with the department.
A news release states, "The caller tells the potential victim that they have a warrant and will need to give the caller money or they will be arrested."
The department states the procedure for contacting anyone with an outstanding warrant does not include a demand for immediate payment of bond.
Anyone who has fallen for this scam is asked to contact the sheriff's department or their local police. The sheriff's non-emergency number is 913-782-0720.
