KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Many people make the decision to move during the spring and summer months. Whether you are moving across town, across the country or back home with the parents during summer break, you should expect and receive fair treatment from the company you hire.
Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt just released a list of items consumers should check when hiring a moving company to avoid a moving nightmare.
Schmidt said avoid the following:
Pay first - If a company demands payment up front, you run risk of the movers running off with your money.
No home inspection needed - Beware of companies that give you an estimate without coming to your home to inspect it. “Often a blind bid sounds too good to be true, and it usually is," the news release said.
No address or insurance - A company that operates without a local address or appropriate insurance is less likely to give you service and protection for your property.
No registration - Be cautious of a company without federal registration. A moving company must display a USDOT number on all their commercial vehicles. The company must also register with the federal motor carrier safety administration.
The AG’s office recommends consumers demand a detailed written estimate before agreeing to any services or payment.
Moving companies are required by federal law to provide customers with the US Department of Transportation’s “Ready to Move?” publication. Before shipping your household goods, the movers must also provide the following:
A federal booklet titled, “Your Rights and Responsibilities When you Move”
A summary of your mover’s arbitration program
Your mover’s tariff for estimate of charges
A summary of your mover’s customer complaint and inquiry procedures, including contact information.
