OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Every bride looks forward to the day they walk down the aisle.  But after they say, “I do”, some brides say, “Sell the dress.”

When Jane Bird's daughter moved out of the area, she thought it was time to part with her wedding dress.  Bird found a consignment shop in Mission that specifically resold wedding dresses.

“They had lots of beautiful wedding dresses…I thought what a good idea,” Bird said.

Bird left the dress to be resold and checked back a few months later.  Bird said the owner told her there was interest in the dress and to check back later.

Months passed and when Bird returned to the consignment store, she found it empty.

"I was shocked because when I had been there just a few months earlier, the store was very busy,” she said.

Consignment shops are popular with people who don't want to deal with the hassles of selling an item on their own.

Before taking a crack at consignment selling, here are some tips.

  1. Go with an established consignment store
  2. Try to connect with other consigners to find out their experiences
  3. Try to find a shop that specializes in selling what you're selling
  4. Look for shops that have creative setups

Call for Action contacted the owner of the Mission wedding dress store who said she moved out of the area and had to close up the business.  The former owner mailed Bird a check for $150.  Bird was pleased to get the payment.

"I was just happy to get a resolution especially so quickly," Bird said.
