KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A Good Samaritan is fighting for his life after trying to stop an armed robbery outside a convenience store in Kansas City, Mo.
According to police, a man was trying to rob a woman outside the Food Stop near Gregory Boulevard and Cleveland Avenue around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when a store clerk went outside to intervene. The would-be robber then shot the clerk in the stomach.
The clerk was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was last listed in critical condition.
Jonna Jones visits the store daily and wasn't surprised to hear how the clerk rushed to protect one of his customers.
"He's always helping other people and, you know, trying to get the other people that are being crazy out of the store and not to come back and always looking out for people," Jones said. "I think it's really sad. I consider him one of my friends."
A patrolling officer was just a block away when the robbery occurred and heard the gunshots.
When he arrived at the scene, the officer saw the suspect running west. He chased him down and made the arrest.
"Sometimes it's once in a life time during your career when you actually catch a robber," police spokesman Darin Snapp said. "The officer just happened to be in the right place at the right time."
Jones is happy police were able to take the suspect into custody and is now hoping her heroic friend pulls through.
