SHAWNEE, Kan. - The bodies of two women fatally shot in the head were found on a trail in Shawnee, Kan., Wednesday afternoon. The gun was discovered on the scene, and law enforcement officials say they're not looking for a shooter.

The women were found at the Mill Creek Streamway Park near 6040 Barker just after 3 p.m. According to a spokesperson with the Johnson County Med-Act, both victims were in their early 50s.

Police dispatchers said their bodies appeared to have been on the trail for a while.

According to a Johnson County Sheriff's spokesperson, deputies found a car in a parking lot near the scene that is linked to one of the victims. He said the victims knew each other, but they have not yet been officially identified.

Neighbors said the trail where the women were found is a popular one.

"These trails, everyone here uses them," Gary Allen said. "This is really surprising and shocking."

Chrissie Adriance said she moved to the area just for the trail. It's a selling point that continues to attract new neighbors.

Jason White said he used the trail -- which is connected to a trail starting in his backyard -- before he bought his house.

As for Wednesday's grisly discovery?

"I don't think it will change my opinion of the neighborhood long term," he said.
