KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Arson is blamed for the massive fire that destroyed a Northeast Kansas City building Wednesday morning.

Detectives are looking for the person or persons responsible for setting the fire inside a vacant building at East 9th Street and Van Brunt Boulevard.

A caller alerted the fire department to blaze about 5:40 a.m.

Crews from the fire station just blocks from the building saw heavy smoke when the arrived.

They began attacking fire from inside the building and other firefighters went onto the roof to help in the fire fight. The crews immediately realized the fire could cause the roof to collapse.

Firefighters were ordered out of the burning building and the roof fell in moments later as power streams of water were concentrated on the flames from ladders raised over the fire.

A realtor told 41 Action News at the scene he thought copper thieves might be behind the fire.

He said the building had been broken into several times in the last year.

The cost of damages has not been released
