LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. - Police are looking for one man and have charged a second after an attempted carjacking at a Lee’s Summit gas station.

Sgt. Chris DePue, a spokesman with the Lee’s Summit Police Department, said the victim was pumping gas at the 7-Eleven at 909 SW Oldham Parkway at about 3:15 a.m. when he was approached by a man with a gun.

The suspect got into the victim’s car and tried to drive away, but the victim jumped into the passenger side, DePue said.

A brief struggle ensued, and the car crashed into a ditch right outside the gas station.

DePue said the suspect got out of the car and into a second vehicle driven by another person.

Later Friday evening, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced that 19-year-old Robert J. Rule, of Lee's Summit, was charged with 1st degree robbery, attempted robbery and two counts of armed criminal action.

According to court documents, Rule told police he had stolen several vehicles prior to the Lee's Summit incident.

He was taken into custody in Cass County, according to Peters Baker.

Police are still looking for the second man involved in the crime. Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline, 816-474-TIPS.
