A disturbance at a Kansas City convenience store ends with one man dead

KANSAS CITY, Missouri - A south Kansas City gas station involved earlier this week in a shooting was involved in a second shooting Friday night.

Officers were called to the Shell gas station at 5501 Bannister Road just before 7 p.m.

Police say a man in his early twenties went into the convenience store and caused a disturbance with the clerks.

A few minutes later, the man was on the ground in front of the store with a gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital where he later died.

The family identifies the man as Fredrick Jones but police are not confirming that information at this time.

The victim’s sister said he visited the store and the nearby K-Mart daily and always asked for change and cigarettes.

"My mom took the papers to both stores and showed he was handicapped. Every last one knew him, so there was no reason to shoot him in the back, was no reason" said Jessica Jones, the victim’s sister.

A witness said one of the clerks was the shooter but police are not saying who shot the man. Initial reports indicate the clerk used a Taser on the customer before shooting him.

Earlier this week, a clerk at the same store fought back when two gunmen tried to rob the gas station.

He fired shots at the gunmen and the would-be robbers ran away. Those suspects have not been arrested.
