FBI redefines 'rape' for first time in 86 years

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The FBI has redefined rape for the first time in 86 years.

Now, men and women can be considered victims –- and both can also be considered perpetrators.

The expansion also includes victims who are unable to give consent because they were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Julie Donelan, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault, says the move is long overdue.

"I think that this change in the definition will really help because it sends a positive message that we're really broadening our understanding of what rape is,” she explained. “People will feel more comfortable in coming forward and knowing that there are going to be resources available to help them."

The change will also help the FBI accurately track the types of sex crimes occurring in the U.S.
