KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A St. Louis man is in custody following a shooting outside a Kansas City nightclub early Sunday morning. Cahlan Clay, 24, faces two counts each of assault of a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action.

The Jackson County Prosecutor's office said Clay shot at least one man in a parking lot near 16th Street and Grand Boulevard around 2:45 a.m. before firing at officers. Police then shot Clay, who was taken to a hospital.

The prosecutor's office said it all started with an argument.

Neighbors told 41 Action News that Luna, a nightclub at 1520 Grand, often attracts this type of disturbance. Luna general manager Stan Bryant disagrees.

"As far as I know, it didn't start here, it didn't escalate here," said Bryant.

Bryant said the club has never experienced this type of violence in its three years of operation.

"We're the only nightclub on this street so it's easy to point a finger at the closest place. It could have happened anywhere," said Bryant.

He said Grand is often packed with people late at night on the weekends, coming from other bars and the Power and Light District.

In May, 22-year-old Marcus Heilderberg was shot and killed outside another club just a block away.

"It's everybody else we have to worry about," said Bryant. "We know what we're doing and we're executing every operation possible to keep our place safe."

The suspect Clay is being held on $500,000 bond in the Jackson County Jail.
