KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Men wearing hard hats shot a man in his 70s in Kansas City, Kan ., on Friday.
Authorities said the shooting occurred near 99th and Leavenworth Road. According to police, two men wearing hard hats got out of a utility vehicle and told the man at the home they were there to check the meter.
Police said the men got into an argument and the resident was shot. He was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. Police are not sure if the suspects were actually utility workers or were posing as utility workers.
"You never know who is at the door. You might even want to ask for credentials or some type if supervisor from that company to call or a phone number that you can contact before you open up the door to someone," cautioned Patrolman Patrick McCallop.
He said the crime was unusual for the area.
Carol Ledesma, who lives in the neighborhood, said she'll take more precautions when strangers come to her door.
"It's sad that we can't trust even our workers," she said.
Another neighbor told 41 Action News that Google Fiber is getting installed in the area, so they see white utility vehicles all the time.
