KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Prosecutors charged a 42-year-old Olathe mom Thursday in connection to a crash in a Kansas City school parking lot Wednesday.

Kelly R. Dixon faces a DWI-aggravated offender felony charge.

According to court documents, a witness heard a crash around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday in the rear parking lot of St. Elizabeth School located at 14 W. 75 St.

The witness told police she saw a car wedged into a stop sign swing arm. The witness said Dixon was sitting in the driver’s seat and appeared to be unresponsive. The witness said the engine of the car was still running, so she turned the car off.

When officers arrived at the scene around 2 p.m., they detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Dixon’s breath and described her balance as swaying and staggering. The officers said her speech was slurred and incoherent. According to court documents, Dixon refused to complete the field sobriety tests.

Dixon was taken into custody where she admitted to drinking prior to driving.

Earlier in the day, police said she had several drinks at Lew’s Grill & Bar located at 7539 Wornall Road. An employee told police Dixon left without paying her tab. According to court documents, the employee said she told Dixon that she shouldn’t drive and asked Dixon to return to the bar to sober up but Dixon got in her car and drove anyway.

During Dixon’s interview with police, she stated that she was drunk and did not know how much she had to drink. Dixon told police she was trying to pick her daughter up from school when she crashed her car at the school and really did not remember what happened.

According to court documents, Dixon had previously been convicted of DWI-related offenses.

In 1999, she was convicted of DWI for an incident that happened on Aug. 3, 1999.

In 1997, Dixon was convicted of involuntary manslaughter – vehicular intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child in connection to the death of her son on Nov. 14, 1996. The fatal crash happened at 113th Terrace and Askew Avenue in Kansas City, Mo. Dixon missed a curve and slammed into a tree.

Prosecutors have recommended a bond of $250,000 for Dixon.
