KANSAS CITY, Missouri - An 80-year-old man admitted in federal court Monday to using a pellet gun to rob a Kansas City bank after failing to rob another bank.

By entering a guilty plea to bank robbery, Augusta Cannon, admitted to entering UMB Bank, at 103rd Street and Stateline Road on Dec. 22, 2009, displayed a weapon and told the teller to give him money.

Cannon walked out with more than $8,700 in cash, but was recognized by a person that knew him when that person saw surveillance images in local media reports.

Cannon was arrested and told agents he had first attempted to rob US Bank, 8701 Blue Ridge Blvd., but walked away when the teller said she didn’t have any money.

He said a few minutes later, he robbed the UMB bank.

Under the plea agreement, the recommended sentence, based on Cannon’s age and mental condition at the time of the offense and his years of service in the United States Air Force, is probation.

Cannon will be formally sentenced after an investigation by the United States Probation Office.
