A Platte City man faces first degree murder and felony assault charges in two different cases involving two women in Platte City.
22-year-old Quintin O'Dell is accused of the May 31, 2011 murder of Alissa Shippert, and the December 26, 2011 assault of Brittany Costello.
Shippert's body was found near the west boat ramp of the Platte Falls Conservation Area along the shoreline of the Platte River on June 1, 2011. The prosecutor alleges that Sippert was fishing alone when O'Dell, a co-worker, saw her and began fishing with her.
While fishing, O'Dell somehow lost his footing in the water and went downstream. O'Dell told investigators, when he reemerged where Shippert was, she was hysterical, thinking he had drowned.
O'Dell told detectives he and Shippert got into a physical altercation that ended with him hitting her in the back of the head with a hatchet. He allegedly continues striking her with the hatchet until she stopped crying and breathing.
O'Dell and Shippert both worked at the Casey's General Store in Platte City.
O'Dell also faces felony assault charges connected to the assault of Brittany Costello. According to the probable cause statement, O'Dell was visiting Costello's apartment on Christmas day when he became upset because she was talking and arguing with another man on the phone.
Following a night of drinking, O'Dell admitted to detectives that he cut Costello's chest and abdomen open with a razor blade . O'Dell told detectives that he saw Costello's intestines fall out of her abdomen onto the living room floor of her apartment.
Costello did survive her injuries and was able to assist police in the investigation.
According to detectives, O'Dell 'confessed to both cases during his police interviews. He's being held in the Platte County jail on a $750,000 dollar bond.
