Osawatomie man dies after being tasered by law enforcement

OSAWATOMIE, Kan. - A man died early Thursday morning after a deputy in Miami County, Kan., used a stun gun on him, authorities said.

According to a statement from the Osawatomie Police Department, the man ran from police while they were investigating a domestic disturbance call just after 1 a.m. in the 1100 block of Chestnut Avenue.

Officers and Miami County Sheriff's deputies chased the man, identified as 32-year-old Travis L. Maupin, for about a block. When he was caught, the statement said, he resisted arrest.

One of the deputies used a Taser gun in an effort to take Maupin into custody.

Sandra Buckley was talking to her son when she heard the commotion in her front yard. 

"They got him handcuffed and he said something about he couldn't breathe. Nobody was on him at that time, and they picked him up and when they picked him up he went limp," she said.

Before they left the scene, Maupin “coded,” according to the statement, and was treated on scene by emergency crews already there to treat injuries of the woman involved in the alleged domestic dispute.

Maupin later died at Miami County Medical Center.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist in the investigation into his death, which police say is normal protocol for a death that occurs while someone is in police custody.

The KBI refused to comment on the case until after it's turned over to the county attorney.
