KANSAS CITY, Mo. - They don't recommend it for everyone.  But Kansas City Police admit a man who intervened in a domestic dispute and held a suspect at gunpoint until they arrived brought about a good outcome.

Police said the suspect began his alleged crime spree by setting fire to his own house in Independence, Mo.

From there, authorities say he drove to his ex-wife's house on McGee just south of Bannister where he crashed his van into the house before confronting her. The woman told police he shot and stabbed her.

She was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said her neighbor intervened when he heard the commotion, subduing the suspect inside the house.

Other neighbors said a judge had issued a restraining order for the suspect to stay away from the woman.  Police said they have been to the woman's house five times in the last two months on domestic calls.

They were glad for the neighbor's help on this day.

"We would always prefer that you let the police handle it," said Maj. Karl Oakman, "but we can't control all situations. And in this situation, it turned out that everything worked out."
