KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A woman is in custody after police said she took a non-related child from the St. Louis area to Colorado.

Kansas City police announced early Saturday that the 5-year-old is safe. The department had said late Friday that the child was believed to be in Kansas City in a car with Kansas license plates.

Police initially said a 25-year-old woman took the child without consent and that they feared for his safety. They said the child and suspect aren't related biologically but provided no other details.

A written statement didn't indicate where in Colorado the boy was found. Kansas City police directed questions to St. Louis County police, who didn't immediately return phone calls.

An Ambert Alert wasn't issued in the boy's disappearance.
