OLATHE, Kansas - A De Soto, Kansas mother accused of leaving her 6-year-old son in an attic was charged with second-degree attempted murder Wednesday.
Rachel Perez was also charged with child abuse and endangering a child.
Perez was arrested after her son, Giovanni, was found alone, hungry, and filthy in an attic in August.
Giovanni’s grandparents had asked Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies to visit the family home.
When they arrived Perez told them Giovanni was not there.
At this time Perez was arrested on an outstanding traffic warrant.
When deputies went back to the house later that night, they found the boy in the attic.
The property owner told NBC Action News Giovanni weighed 20 pounds.
Family members say Giovanni has Down syndrome.
Perez is pregnant and has two other children who are in state custody along with Giovanni.
