KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Police are searching for the armed man who robbed a bank on the Country Club Plaza Saturday afternoon.
The robber managed to escape the Commerce Bank, 118 W. 47th St., just before 2 p.m.
Police said he demanded money and claimed to have an explosive device in a bag he was wearing around his waist.
Diners across the street at the Cheesecake Factory said they didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary at the bank – no audible alarm and no one running away – until police pulled up with guns drawn moments later.
“Either they’re really stupid or they’re really genius, because in the middle of the day on the Plaza – you just – you wouldn’t think it,” shopper Angel Gerkin said. “I just don’t believe it.”
The suspect is described as a black male in his 50s. He is around 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs approximately 200 pounds.
He fled on foot northbound on Wyandotte with an undisclosed amount of money, according to authorities.
No one was injured. The FBI is assisting with the investigation.
