KANSAS CITY, Missouri - Kansas City police responded to two downtown explosions Thursday afternoon, but say the two are not believed to be related.

The first blast happened near an alley at 17th and Grand Avenue at about 1 p.m.

According to police reports, witnesses stated they observed a man put an unknown item in the metal yellow clothing donation box in the parking lot of the Valero station. The man walked away and shortly after a large explosion was heard.

KCPD Bomb and Arson and KCFD responded to the scene. Grand was closed between 16th and 18th Streets. Police reopened the three blocks by about 5:15 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

The second explosion happened Thursday around 2:20 p.m. Officers determined the explosion to have come from the main floor of a parking garage in the 300 block of Armour.

According to police reports, a vehicle apparently had a gas leak and someone had a lit cigarette, igniting it.
