ST. LOUIS (AP) - A woman is charged with misdemeanor animal abuse for having her son tie a puppy to a truck before the dog was dragged along a St. Louis interstate highway.
Officials believe 41-year-old Benetta Johnson of East St. Louis, Ill., tried to return the dog to her ex-husband by having her 13-year-old son tie the pit bull by a leash to a pickup truck on Nov. 20. The pickup driver, Victor Washington, did not see the puppy before he began driving.
Washington said the puppy was one he gave his ex-wife's daughter months before.
The dog, named Trooper by those nursing it back to health, is recovering but still faces weeks of treatment.
