CASS COUNTY, Mo. - A redevelopment project at a Cass County lake may also have rekindled an investigation into stolen cars.
Cass County Sheriff spokesman Cpt. Kevin Tieman said the Missouri Department of Conservation was getting started with a redevelopment project at Amarugia Lake when they located two vehicles submerged near a boat ramp on Tuesday.
Later that night, dive teams recovered an older Ford Mustang and a Cadillac sedan, but due to decay, investigators haven’t been able to trace where the cars came from or former owners.
“They are most likely stolen vehicles, but the exposure to water and mud has deteriorated many of the identifying marks making it very hard to verify,” Cass County Sheriff Dwight Diehl said in a release.
Amarugia Lake is west of US Highway 71 south of Harrisonville.
