ATCHISON, Kan. - An on-duty police officer was shot and killed Friday afternoon by a man who then shot himself.
Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon said Sgt. David Enzbrenner was serving a nuisance complaint order at an Atchison house when he was shot.
Calhoon said the alleged shooter, 25-year-old Skyler Barbee, came "out of nowhere," fired at the officer and then shot himself.
A LifeNet helicopter transported Enzbrenner to the University of Kansas Hospital where he later died.
Enzbrenner was a 24-year veteran of the Atchison Police Department. The 46-year-old lived about a block and a half away from the shooting.
Enzbrenner leaves behind a wife and three teen daughters.
The alleged shooter’s grandparents live across the street from the house where Enzbrenner was serving the nuisance order. It is not yet known if Barbee was already outside or if he came out of his grandparents’ home when he allegedly shot Enzbrenner.
Barbee was released from the county jail on Oct. 24, 2011. The county prosecutor said he served time for a misdemeanor for battery on a law enforcement officer.
The incident remains under investigation.
