KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A teenager is charged with murder after an elderly woman was stabbed 32 times.
Kevin J. Brewer, 17, of Kansas City, is charged in Jackson County with second-degree murder, burglary and two counts of armed criminal action.
Marise Barrett's legally blind husband found her body Sunday morning inside their house in the 4400 block of E. 33rd Street.
Court documents state she was in her bed with stab wounds in her neck and shoulders.
Police said someone took Barrett's cellphone during the crime. A family member found calls had been made on the phone after Barrett's murder, according to court documents. Detectives tracked the phone to a Kansas School and arrested Brewer.
He told detectives he and another teen, a juvenile, left the ReStart shelter about midnight and walked to the Barrett home. The juvenile allegedly told Brewer he was mad at Barrett for throwing foul water on his mother, according to court documents.
Brewer told detectives the teen broke a garage window and the two got into the house. He also said he saw the juvenile grab something from a kitchen drawer.
Court documents state Brewer told detectives in their interview with him that he put in headphones because he didn't want to be part of what the teen was doing.
The teen allegedly took the cell phone an MP3 player, according to the documents. The pair walked back to the homeless shelter. The second teen, whose name was not given because he is a juvenile, had lived in the Barrett home.
Marise Barrett told him to leave the house in January.
